Yalumba Hand Picked Shiraz Viognier 2023
Yalumba Hand Picked Shiraz Viognier is a beautifully aromatic, elegant red from South Australia's cool-climate Eden Valley. Combining 98% Shiraz with a small addition of Viognier, it delivers fragrant notes of violets, raspberry, cranberry and dark plum, layered with baking spice, dried citrus and a subtle savoury edge. The palate is medium-bodied and wonderfully expressive, with juicy red and dark berry flavours, fine powdery tannins and a silky, supple texture. Bright natural acidity brings freshness and definition, leading to a long, gently spiced finish. A refined alternative to heavier Barossa Shiraz, it's a fantastic match for slow-cooked lamb, roast duck, pork belly or mushroom dishes.
What the winery says:
Part of Yalumba's Distinguished Sites collection, the 2023 Hand Picked Shiraz Viognier is sourced entirely from selected Eden Valley vineyards. Rather than adding Viognier juice, the winemakers ferment its grape skins alongside selected Shiraz parcels, enhancing the wine's perfume, texture and complexity. Approximately 10% whole-bunch fermentation adds another layer of character, while maturation for 14 months in French oak hogsheads and barriques, including 23% new oak, brings subtle structure and spice. The finished wine is medium-bodied, with 13.5% alcohol, expressive fruit and an elegant, lingering finish.
