Unico Zelo Esoterico isn't quite white and isn't quite red, and the South Australian couple behind it are perfectly happy leaving it there. A head-turning blend of Zibibbo, Gewürztraminer, Moscato Giallo, Greco and Fiano gives citrus peel, ginger, mandarin oil and heady florals, with a fine line of tannin holding it all together. Made by Brendan and Laura Carter at Unico Zelo in South Australia, Esoterico is a skin-contact blend of Zibibbo, Gewürztraminer, Moscato Giallo, Greco and a touch of Fiano, made with no fining or filtration and only a touch of sulphur at bottling. It shows citrus peel, ginger, mandarin oil and heady floral aromatics, cloudy and amber in colour, with a fine line of tannin giving it shape. It's a natural match for aged cheeses, spicy dishes or simply drunk cold with friends.
