Two Rivers Phoenix Pinot Gris brings a generous, textural take on Marlborough Pinot Gris, with ripe pear and stone fruit joined by toasted nuts, subtle florals and a lightly exotic Turkish delight note. There is plenty of richness through the middle, but fresh acidity keeps everything bright, juicy and composed, leading into a long, clean finish. Winemaker David Clouston grew up around Marlborough's Wairau and Awatere river valleys, and Two Rivers takes its name from those two waterways. This is a smart choice when you want a white with more texture than Sauvignon Blanc, especially alongside pan-Asian dishes, roast chicken or pork.
What the winery says:
The fruit was lightly pressed before a cool fermentation, predominantly in stainless steel to preserve purity and Pinot Gris character. The wine then spent four months on light yeast lees to build complexity and mouthfeel. Two Rivers describes aromas of pear, toasted pine nuts and Turkish delight, with fresh stone fruit, roasted almond and wild herb flavours on a bright, juicy and well-balanced palate. The wine carries 6 g/l residual sugar and is recommended for drinking through to 2029.
What the experts say:
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, 95 Points and 5 Stars (2025 Vintage)
“Finely composed and elegantly expressed, the wine shows white-fleshed nectarine, Nashi pear, lemon peel, and white flower aromas on the nose. The palate is focused and flowing with fleshy texture and beautifully pitched acidity, finishing splendidly long and refined. At its best: now to 2030.”
Cameron Douglas MS, 93 Points and Excellent (2025 Vintage)
“An excellent wine with a bouquet of focus and concentration, mineral and ripe pomaceous fruits. Crisp, taut and dry with just a hint of residual sweetness, contrasting acidity and lengthy finish. Flavours of red and pink apple, pears and a touch of quince then white spice and wild flowers. As the wine opens out in glass some citrus flavours begin to emerge along with a light chalky, mealy texture. Well made with best drinking from 2026 through 2029.”
