90/100 Decanter DWWA (2019)

Peter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz is a magnificent expression of Barossa Valley Shiraz, delivering the depth, richness, and structure that have made this flagship wine a favourite among serious Australian red wine lovers. The 2019 vintage is packed with concentrated blackberry, boysenberry, and dark plum, layered with dark chocolate, liquorice, cedar, and smoky oak. Full-bodied and wonderfully plush, it combines generous fruit with firm, finely textured tannins and a long, savoury finish. First produced in 1987, Stonewell takes its name from the Barossa district that Peter Lehmann believed produced particularly outstanding Shiraz. This is a wine built for a special occasion, a perfectly cooked ribeye, or a few more years tucked away in the cellar.

What the winery says:

Stonewell Shiraz is crafted from carefully selected parcels of premium Barossa Valley Shiraz, sourced from low-yielding vineyards producing small berries with exceptional flavour concentration. The 2019 vintage displays a deep crimson colour with a purple hue and expressive aromas of blackberry, boysenberry, dark plum, cedarwood, liquorice, and smoky oak. Fermentation is handled gently to preserve the richness and character of the fruit, followed by maturation in French oak hogsheads. The palate is powerful and concentrated, with layers of dark berries, chocolate, and spiced fruitcake supported by substantial, well-integrated tannins. Richness and freshness combine in a long, structured finish, with the depth and balance needed for extended cellaring.
