91/100 Decanter (2025)
Pask Gimblett Gravels Syrah comes from Hawke's Bay's Gimblett Gravels, and the 2025 release keeps things supple rather than hulking. Deep purple in the glass, it shows lifted floral aromas and red liquorice before moving into a medium-bodied palate with gentle tannins and a savoury finish. Pask farms a single Gimblett Gravels vineyard on Gimblett Road, where the stony riverbed soils retain warmth and are particularly well suited to Syrah. This is a fragrant, savoury red with plenty of easy appeal at the table. Pour it alongside roast lamb, braised beef, venison or a deeply savoury mushroom dish.
What the winery says:
Pask describes its Gimblett Gravels Syrah as an estate-grown, single-vineyard wine, with fruit coming from its Gimblett Road vineyard. The coarse, stony soils hold daytime warmth and help Syrah achieve full ripeness while retaining natural freshness. For the 2025 bottling, the supplier notes a deep purple colour, floral aromas with a touch of red liquorice, a medium-weight palate, supple tannins and a savoury finish.
What the experts say:
James Suckling, 92/100 (2023 Vintage)
"Fruity and floral, showing lots of dark cherries, violets and a lift of peppercorns on the nose. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and a flavorful finish. Sustainable. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
