Mills Reef Reserve Gimblett Gravels Syrah 2024
Mills Reef Reserve Gimblett Gravels Syrah brings the rich, dark-fruited character of Hawke's Bay's celebrated Gimblett Gravels into a beautifully rounded red. Blueberry and dark Doris plum lead the way, with liquorice, subtle spice and a touch of toasty oak adding complexity. Full-bodied and generous, it has supple tannins, a smooth texture and a savoury finish with hints of pepper and warming spice. There's plenty of flavour here without sacrificing balance, making it a lovely match for roast duck with plum sauce, slow-cooked lamb or grilled beef. A great choice for those who enjoy a richly flavoured Syrah with depth, structure and a little elegance.
What the winery says:
Grown in the Gimblett Gravels district of Hawke's Bay, the fruit benefited from a warm, dry 2024 growing season. Two carefully selected parcels underwent a three-day cold soak before fermentation in open-top stainless-steel vats. The wine was matured for 24 months in French oak, with 25% new barrels, before being blended and bottled in August 2026. The result delivers concentrated dark fruit, integrated tannins and a balanced structure, reflecting Mills Reef's focus on flavour, texture and varietal expression.
What the experts say:
Cameron Douglas MS, 90/100, Premium (2024)
“A very good bouquet and palate of dark plums and blackberry, black currant flesh and stony soils. There’s a smoky woody quality framing the bouquet with a clove and vanilla quality, then peppery spices and warming alcohol quality. Dry with a satin-cream mouthfeel then as the tannins and acidity layer through the palate the wine gains tension and sensory impact. Generous and well made with best drinking from day of purchase through 2029.”
