91/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2023)

Mills Reef Reserve Gimblett Gravels Merlot is a rich, lavishly flavoured Merlot from Hawke's Bay's renowned Gimblett Gravels, bringing together ripe blackberry, juicy boysenberry and dark plum with fragrant violets and a touch of toasty oak. The palate is full-bodied and succulent, with layers of dark berry fruit, chocolate and subtle savoury notes complemented by a lovely mineral edge. Fine but structured tannins and fresh acidity keep everything nicely balanced, leading to a lingering finish with a hint of leather and spice. There's plenty of depth here without sacrificing approachability, making it a great match for roast lamb, grilled steak, slow-cooked beef or venison with a rich plum sauce.

What the winery says:

Sourced from the stony soils of Hawke's Bay's Gimblett Gravels winegrowing district, this full-bodied Merlot reflects Mills Reef's Reserve philosophy of using low-yielding vines to produce concentrated fruit with balance and structure. The winery describes expressive violet, blackberry and boysenberry aromas, with dark chocolate and toasty oak adding richness and complexity. The palate is velvety and succulent, with a subtle hint of leather and a lingering, savoury finish. A natural companion to venison, particularly alongside plum sauce and roasted vegetables.

What the experts say:

Cameron Douglas MS, 91/100 (2023 Vintage)
“Ripe, varietal and fruity bouquet with aromas of plums and red berry fruits, a seam of steely minerality then violet and clay follow. Nice weight and tension on the palate with moderately firm tannins, plenty of acidity and a balanced, even finish. There’s a tartness to the finish before the core fruit flavours fold back in again. Overall well made and ready to drink alongside  food. Ideal drinking from mid to late 2025 through 2028."
