Langmeil Blacksmith Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
Langmeil Blacksmith Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich, beautifully structured Barossa red that brings together generous dark fruit and classic Cabernet character. Lifted aromas of blueberry, blackcurrant and black olive are layered with cedar, liquorice and warm sweet spices. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with juicy berry flavours, brambly spice and subtle savoury notes supported by velvety, fine-grained tannins. A long, fruit-filled finish carries hints of liquorice and spice, giving the wine plenty of depth without sacrificing approachability. Named in honour of a Prussian blacksmith who settled in Langmeil in 1842, this is a wonderfully characterful Cabernet that's right at home alongside braised beef cheeks, roast lamb, mushroom risotto or mature cheeses.
What the winery says:
Crafted by the Lindner family at Langmeil Winery, the 2023 Blacksmith is a blend of 95.4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4.6% Malbec sourced from vineyards across the Barossa, with vines ranging from 15 to 62 years old. The cooler 2023 growing season allowed for extended ripening, producing fruit with excellent aromatic intensity and balanced structure. The wine was matured for 23 months in French oak, comprising 20% new and 80% seasoned barrels, adding complexity while allowing the fruit to remain the focus. At 14.5% alcohol, it offers generous flavour, fine tannins and the potential to cellar through to 2036.
What the experts say:
Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion, 93/100 (2023)
"Old-vine cabernet sauvignon planted in 1959, '64 and '73; matured 24 months in French oak, 36% new. Ripe blackberry, blueberry and black cherry with hints of baking spices, anise, nutty oak, olive tapenade, roasting meats, meadow flowers and crushed rocks. Deep and plush in black fruits, with plenty of chew to the sandy tannins and a long crème-de-cassis flow on the exit."
Huon Hooke, The Real Review, 92/100 (2023)
"Deep, rich colour and an attractive combination of dark chocolate, blackberry and tar, the sweet berry flavours bold and generous on the palate, with abundant soft tannins that are refined and easy on the mouth. Quite delicious. Sweet fruit and plenty of early appeal and charm. It's a real crowd pleaser."
