Kalleske Moppa Shiraz is a rich, generous Barossa Shiraz with plenty of polish, combining ripe boysenberry, dark cherry and plum with violets, clove, chocolate and warm spice. The fruit comes from Kalleske's estate at Moppa in the north-western Barossa, where the family has farmed since 1853. A small addition of Petit Verdot and Viognier brings extra depth and aromatic lift, while fine, plush tannins keep all that flavour neatly in shape. Full-bodied without becoming cumbersome, it is a cracking match for chargrilled lamb, slow-cooked beef or a well-stocked barbecue.
What the winery says:
The 2024 is made from 94% Shiraz, 3% Petit Verdot and 3% Viognier, sourced from the Kalleske family's Moppa vineyard in the Barossa Valley. It was matured for 12 months in French, American and Hungarian oak hogsheads, with 20% new oak. Deep purple in colour, it shows violets, clove, boysenberry, glacé cherry, spiced fruitcake, milk chocolate, roasted nuts and toasted oak. The palate is full-bodied and fruit-driven, supported by plush tannins and integrated oak, with a long finish of ripe fruit and warm spice. The wine is Australian Certified Organic and 14.5% alcohol.
What the experts say:
Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion, 93 Points (2024)
“Predominantly Moppa shiraz with just a dash of petit verdot (3%) and viognier (3%) matured for 12 months in 20% new French, American and Hungarian oak. Fleshy red and dark cherry with additions of plum and mulberry fruits. Edged with mixed spice and hints of violets, rose petals, fruitcake, dark chocolate and earth. The palate is pure and supple, with ample tannin and a seam of fresh acidity.”
