Chateau de Sancerre Rouge shows the other side of Sancerre, with Pinot Noir taking centre stage in a fresh, finely structured red. The 2022 brings together red cherry, raspberry, cranberry and darker plum fruit, with floral, mineral and gently savoury notes adding interest. There is enough ripeness and depth to give the wine presence, while supple tannins and bright freshness keep everything elegant. A smart pick for Pinot drinkers looking beyond Burgundy, and particularly good with roast poultry, charcuterie or mushroom dishes. A slight chill will do it no harm at all.
What the winery says:
Château de Sancerre is a 55-hectare estate on the left bank of the Loire, with vineyards covering several of the appellation's characteristic soil types. The estate describes its red Sancerre as an expression of these contrasting terroirs, with flint contributing length, white earth bringing roundness and power, and limestone providing freshness, structure and silky tannins. The wines are vinified, matured and bottled at the château, and the vineyard holds High Environmental Value certification.
What the experts say:
Reggie Solomon, Wine Enthusiast, 91 Points (2022)
“The category of Sancerre Rouge is rising in quality, and this bottling is a good example.”
Geoffrey Moss MW, Gismondi on Wine, 90 Points (2022)
“This is light and juicy, keeping in the Sancerre rouge (read: pinot noir) idiom.”
