92/100 Emma Jenkins MW (2025)
Bryterlater Petina Petillant Naturel is made from 100% Pinot Noir grown in North Canterbury; a dry, bright and beautifully focused pét-nat with red apple, strawberry and a lightly bitter Aperol-like edge, backed by sea-spray freshness and mouthfilling acidity. Barrel fermentation and time on lees give the wine more texture and polish than many rustic pét-nats, while riddling and disgorgement leave it clear and precise. Fresh enough for aperitivo duty but with enough substance for the table, it is a particularly good match for fried chicken, charcuterie or salty snacks.
What the winery says:
The 2025 Petina is described as bold and fruit-forward while aiming for the precision of a more traditional sparkling style. The Pinot Noir is barrel fermented, then bottled on lees where autolysis builds body and shapes the flavour profile. The wine is subsequently riddled and disgorged to remove sediment. Tasting notes highlight red apple, strawberry, Aperol, sea mist and lively, mouthfilling acidity. Bryterlater works with organically farmed fruit from selected North Canterbury sites and follows a minimal-intervention approach in the winery.
