92/100 Cameron Douglas (2025)
Black Cottage Pinot Rose is a crisp, salmon-pink Marlborough rosé made from Pinot Noir grown in the Southern Valleys. Red berries and watermelon lead the palate, with rosewater, fennel, spice and a gently savoury herbal edge giving the wine plenty of interest. The finish is juicy, dry and bright, driven by crunchy acidity. Black Cottage draws on founder Dave Clouston's time in Corsica and the south of France, so the style has a distinctly Mediterranean lean while keeping Marlborough freshness front and centre. Chill it well and bring out the charcuterie, summer salads or anything destined for a sunny afternoon.
What the winery says:
The 2025 wine is made from Pinot Noir grown in Marlborough's Southern Valleys, with wind blown loess over clay soils. A warm spring and excellent flowering were followed by a cool, wet summer, then dry and warm conditions in February that helped the fruit reach harvest with vibrant acidity and concentration. Cool fermentation in stainless steel was used to retain fruit purity and varietal character. Expect rosewater, red liquorice, fennel and sea breeze aromas, with red berries, watermelon, spice and Provence herbs on a refreshing, juicy palate. Winemaker Sanna Stander crafted the wine at 12.5% alcohol, and the winery identifies it as sustainably grown and vegan friendly.
