90/100 Sammy Wilkinson (2024)
Black Cottage Merlot is a supple, fruit-forward Hawke's Bay red, led by ripe plum, raspberry, dark berries and violet, with a cocoa note and fine tannins bringing gentle structure. Sourced from Gimblett Gravels, it is 95% Merlot with 5% Cabernet Franc, giving the wine juicy generosity with a little extra shape and freshness. Eleven months in French oak adds polish without losing the bright fruit at its core. It is an approachable choice for anyone after a smooth New Zealand Merlot with enough depth for the dinner table. Try it with crispy duck breast and a plum glaze.
What the winery says:
The sustainably grown fruit comes from the warm, free-draining, stony alluvial soils of Gimblett Gravels in Hawke's Bay. The 2024 blend is 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Lower yields in the 2024 harvest delivered concentrated flavours and natural balance. Fermentation took place in small stainless steel tanks with gentle maceration to retain vibrant fruit, followed by eleven months in French oak. The finished wine shows violet, ripe raspberry, plum, cocoa bean and dark berry flavours, supported by fine, supple tannins and a fresh, refined finish.
What the experts say:
Cameron Douglas MS, Wine and Beverage Reviews, 92 Points, Premium (2024)
“Dry with plenty of weight and lots of mouthfeel, the core red fruit flavours are persistent and quite delicious.”
