Black Cottage Chardonnay brings a generous, polished take on Marlborough Chardonnay, layering white nectarine and citrus with toasted almond, hazelnut, brioche and a gentle lick of vanilla. The 2023 has a silky, mouth-filling texture, but bright citrus acidity keeps the richness moving and gives the finish plenty of lift. Fruit comes from old Mendoza vines on the Rapaura Gravels, adding a clear sense of place to a wine that is both comforting and energetic. It is an easy pick for Chardonnay drinkers who like some oak and creaminess without losing freshness, especially alongside roast pork or crisp fried chicken.

What the winery says:

The 2023 Chardonnay is sourced from old Mendoza vines on the Rapaura Gravels, with stony alluvial soils and a cool summer helping the fruit ripen gently and evenly. The grapes were hand picked and lightly whole bunch pressed directly into barrels, with 30% new François Fréres and Mercurey oak. Natural fermentation and partial malolactic fermentation were followed by 12 months on lees, then light filtration before bottling. The winery describes lemon zest, flinty minerality, white nectarine, toasted almond, warm spice and buttery brioche, with butterscotch and roasted hazelnut on a silky palate balanced by citrus-driven acidity. The wine is sustainably grown.
