Neal and Judy Ibbotson arrived in Marlborough in 1967, when the region was still quiet farming country of sheep, orchards and crops, and their original intention was simply to expand the family pig farm. Curiosity about the emerging local wine industry led Judy to plant the family's first vineyard in 1978, and in 1994 the couple finally took the leap of establishing Saint Clair Family Estate, named for the Sinclair family who had first settled the property generations before them.

From that start the winery built a reputation for quality across both Marlborough and New Zealand's Hawke's Bay, with the Reserve tier showcasing individual sites such as Godfrey's Creek and Omaka. The range spans an aromatic Gewurztraminer, a textured Pinot Gris, a fine Pinot Noir and a rounded Chardonnay.
