Mateus Rosé was created in the early 1940s by Fernando Van Zeller Guedes, who co-founded what would become Sogrape, now Portugal's largest wine producer, alongside his brothers in 1942 to help Portuguese wine reach export markets during the difficulties brought on by the Second World War. Working with winemaker Eugène Hellis of Quinta da Aveleda, Guedes developed one of the first commercialised rosé wines, packaged in a distinctive curved bottle inspired by First World War soldiers' field flasks.

Guedes marketed the wine by sending two bottles to Portuguese ambassadors around the world, one to drink and one to share, an early example of word-of-mouth marketing that helped the Rosé reach more than 120 countries. It remains one of the best-selling wines in the whole of Portuguese history.
