Chiarli
Chiarli 1860 is a family-owned Lambrusco producer based in Modena, in Italy's Emilia-Romagna region, founded by Cleto Chiarli in 1860 when he opened a wine cellar beside his Modena trattoria to meet demand for his own wine. The company has stayed in the family ever since, and in 1952 became the first winery in the region to install autoclaves, adopting the pressurised tank method to make Lambrusco sparkling. The family still farms its own vineyards at Tenuta Cialdini, a nineteenth-century estate acquired in 1898.
Chiarli's fruit comes from around Modena, home to the three main Lambrusco denominations, Sorbara, Grasparossa and Salamino, each shaped by different soils and giving distinct styles of red wine from pale and floral to deep and structured. The grapes are vinified using the Charmat, or tank, method the family helped pioneer, producing fresh sparkling wine with the gentle fizz and bright acidity Lambrusco is known for.
