Chapoutier
Chapoutier is a family-run wine house based in Tain l'Hermitage, in the Northern Rhône Valley of France, founded in 1808, with the Chapoutier name attached since Marius Chapoutier joined as a partner in 1897. Michel Chapoutier took over the company in 1990 and pioneered biodynamic viticulture there the following year, a practice the house has followed ever since. Now run with the next generation, Mathilde and Maxime Chapoutier, the house remains centred on the vineyards at the foot of the Hermitage hill where Marius first made his name.
The house's core holdings sit across Northern Rhône appellations such as Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Côtes-du-Rhône, farmed under biodynamic principles since the early 1990s. Syrah is the defining red variety of these steep granite slopes, while Viognier underpins the house's white wines from Condrieu. Chapoutier has since extended this terroir-first approach to estates in Roussillon and Alsace, though the Rhône remains its home.
