Albarino

Albarino is best known as the signature white of Rias Baixas in northwest Spain, where its thick skins and naturally high acidity evolved to handle the region's damp, Atlantic-influenced climate. The same grape crosses the border into Portugal under the name Alvarinho, where it forms the backbone of the best Vinho Verde. It has since found an enthusiastic following well beyond Iberia, and New Zealand producers, particularly in Marlborough, Hawke's Bay, and Nelson, have taken to it for much the same reason Sauvignon Blanc thrives here: naturally high acidity and a knack for handling cooler, maritime conditions.
