Main Divide Merlot Cabernet brings a generous North Canterbury spin to the classic Bordeaux blend. Predominantly Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon, it layers blackberry, blackcurrant and damson plum with touches of liquorice, tobacco, eucalyptus and black olive. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, yet finely polished tannins and fresh acidity keep everything composed. Made by the Donaldson family behind Pegasus Bay, this is an approachable red with genuine structure and enough depth to reward a few years in the cellar. Excellent alongside beef brisket, steak, slow-cooked lamb or a rich mushroom ragu.

What the winery says:

The grapes were harvested from South Island vineyards between 17 and 30 April 2023. Fermentation began naturally in stainless steel tanks, with regular pumping over to extract balanced tannins before the wine was gently pressed into French oak barriques. It underwent natural malolactic fermentation the following summer and matured in oak for 18 months. The finished blend is predominantly Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon, showing ripe berry fruit, polished tannins, subtle oak and a long finish. It is dry, contains 13.5% alcohol and has an indicated ageing potential of six to eight years.

What the experts say:

Candice Chow, Candice Wine Chat, 93 Points (2023)
“A Merlot predominant blend with Cabernet Sauvignon, well-made and satisfying with harmonious plush fruit and acid balance, framed by silky tannin.”

Cameron Douglas MS, 92 Points, Premium (2023)
“Aromas and flavours of dark plums and blackberries, there’s a layer of dried spice blackcurrant and violets then a light wood smoke quality.”
