Mouton Cadet was created in 1930 by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, owner of Château Mouton Rothschild and, as the younger son of the family, the inspiration for the name, cadet being French for the junior sibling. At just twenty-eight, Rothschild saw an opportunity that few in Bordeaux had grasped: a consistently made, widely available rosé and red wine that could carry the region's reputation for quality far beyond the handful of estates able to produce it themselves, built on the same Cabernet Sauvignon the family's own vineyards are known for.

That founding idea still shapes the range today, with French Bordeaux AOC wines crafted for reliable, everyday drinking. The Bordeaux Rouge leans on Merlot in its blend for soft, plummy fruit, carrying forward Rothschild's original ambition to bring genuine Bordeaux wine to a much wider table than the great chateaux alone could ever reach.
