Gemtree's vineyard was planted in McLaren Vale, Australia, in 1980 by Paul and Jill Buttery, who spent decades restoring a degraded creek line on the property into a thriving wetland alongside their grapes. Their daughter, Melissa Brown, became the estate's biodynamic viticulturist, and her husband Mike Brown its winemaker, launching the Gemtree Wines label in 1998 and converting the vineyard fully to biodynamic and organic farming.

In 2023 the Randall Wine Group acquired Gemtree, with Melissa Brown continuing to manage the vineyard she has tended since childhood. The range spans Tempranillo and Fiano through to Shiraz and rosé, all grown across a property that has expanded from its original 38 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz into one of the region's most diverse biodynamic sites.
