Coonawarra sits in South Australia's Limestone Coast and owes its reputation almost entirely to terra rossa, a thin strip of red clay-loam over limestone that has made it one of the country's most celebrated sites for Cabernet Sauvignon. The soil drains well while retaining just enough moisture, and the region's cool nights help preserve acidity that gives the wines real structure alongside their characteristic blackcurrant and eucalyptus notes. Shiraz performs well here too, though it tends to sit in Cabernet's shadow, and a handful of producers round out their ranges with rose and crisp whites.
