Cantina Zaccagnini
Cantina Zaccagnini is a family winery in Bolognano, in the Abruzzo region of central Italy, founded in 1978 by Marcello Zaccagnini, who took over and expanded a small family estate started by his father. Since 1984 the winery has also served as a gathering place for local artists, musicians and thinkers. Every bottle is still wrapped with a dried vine cutting, a distinctive touch tied to the estate's origins in the vineyard itself.
The winery's vineyards sit in the hills around Bolognano, on Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC land shaped by the nearby Maiella mountains and a cooler, hillier microclimate than much of the surrounding region. Montepulciano forms the backbone of the estate's reds, while the same grape, vinified as a rosé, produces Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo, one of the region's most distinctive styles. The result is wine that reflects both Abruzzo's warm climate and its higher, cooler vineyard sites.
