Brookfields is widely regarded as Hawke's Bay's oldest boutique winery, established by the Ellis family in 1937. Its modern era began in 1977, when Peter Robertson bought the property on the advice of Tom McDonald, a respected local winemaker, and set about rebuilding it as a small, family-run producer. Peter and his wife Sharon still run Brookfields today, continuing a winery that has now operated continuously for close to nine decades.

Brookfields draws its grapes from four Hawke's Bay vineyard sites: the home block at Meeanee, the Ohiti Estate across the Ngaruroro River from the Gimblett Gravels, a site in Tuki Tuki, and a Bridge Pa vineyard known as Hillside. The Ohiti Valley's river stones make it one of the district's hottest sites, suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and other late-ripening reds. Working across several sites lets Brookfields draw on genuinely different soils each vintage.
