Bodegas Torres
Bodegas Torres is a family-owned winery founded in 1870 by brothers Jaime and Miguel Torres Vendrell in Vilafranca del Penedès, in Catalonia, north-eastern Spain. What began as a wine trade with Cuba grew into one of Spain's largest wine companies, still owned and run by the same family, now in its fifth generation. In 1979, the estate's Mas La Plana Cabernet Sauvignon famously placed ahead of top Bordeaux and Californian wines at a blind tasting held in Paris.
Torres holds the largest vineyard area of any producer within Penedès, the Denominación de Origen on Catalonia's Mediterranean coast, where warm days and cooling sea breezes suit both local and international varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon underpins the estate's best-known reds, while Garnacha forms the backbone of everyday red wines such as Sangre de Toro, the family's long-standing flagship blend.
