Bogle Petite Sirah is proof that Petite Sirah - not to be confused with Syrah, despite the shared ancestry - deserves more attention than it gets. Grown on the Bogle family's Clarksburg estate, now in its sixth generation, this is a dark, inky red loaded with boysenberry, blackberry and blueberry fruit, backed by roasted coffee bean and cacao notes and a silky, plush texture that never feels sharp or astringent. It's a big wine without being a blunt one - there's real depth here alongside the immediate appeal. If you love full-bodied reds but want a break from Cabernet, this is the obvious detour. Good with anything off the grill, especially red meat.

What the winery says:

Bogle describes this wine as concentrated and lush, opaque and inky in the glass, opening with touches of cacao and roasted coffee bean on the nose. The palate follows with dark, jammy fruit - boysenberry, blackberry and blueberry, picked at full ripeness - carried on a silky, luxurious texture. The Bogle family has farmed in California's Clarksburg since the 1960s and built their own winery in 1979, now run by the sixth generation.

What the experts say:

Tonya Pitts, Wine Enthusiast, 92/100 (2022 Vintage)
“This selection is supple with boysenberry, dried sage, espresso and notes of toasty oak, maple and fresh violets on the nose. It tumbles onto your palate with flavors of blackberry, blueberry pie and graham cracker with a white pepper finish. It is a classic grape expression, which is often misunderstood—a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon.”
