Ripe raspberry, dark cherry and plum lead into red florals, savoury spice and a darker, earthy undertow. The texture is silky but structured, with concentrated fruit, fine tannins and neatly judged French oak giving it real length. This is already compelling with air, though the winery has built it to reward patient cellaring. A smart match for roast duck, lamb or mushroom-rich dishes, and an excellent choice when your Pinot needs a little more muscle without losing finesse.

What the winery says:

Fruit came from the certified-organic B and D blocks of Clayvin Vineyard, all planted to Clone 5, and was hand-picked on 9 March 2021. After hand sorting, destemming and individual berry sorting, the wine fermented in one-tonne open fermenters with a small whole-bunch component, following a six-day cold soak. It spent 11 months in French oak barriques, 40% new, and was bottled unfined. Te Whare Ra describes ripe raspberry, red florals, plum and berries, moving towards savoury complexity, supple tannin and a long finish. Cellaring guidance is 5 to 12+ years from release.

What the experts say:

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, 99 Points (2021)
“This is totally seductive on the nose, showing dark cherry, sweet raspberry, rich floral, game and warm spice aromas, followed by a richly textured palate offering exceptional drive and persistency. The oak is discreet and gorgeously infused, combined with layers of polished tannins, making the wine symphonic and seamlessly structured. A profound offering with density and power, yet with no hard edges, finishing magnificently long and flatteringly classy. At its best: 2025 to 2039.”

Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, 96 Points (2021)
"Fragrantly aromatic pinot with attractive floral, raspberry, cherry, vanilla, and subtle spice flavours. Impressive density, power and length with an attractive core of fruit sweetness. Elegant wine that is delicious to drink now but should develop well with bottle age."

James Suckling, 96 Points (2021)
"Delightful and lively red fruits and floral notes followed by pomelo zest, sweet squash and crushed cherry tomatoes. Medium-bodied with refreshing acidity and finely grained velvety tannins. Subtle cedar and toasty undertones on the palate. Elegant and balanced wine displaying great complexity and purity. In the mouth, the wine is supple and ductile—the acidity is almost tart—like biting into a sweet red apple. The tannins are super fine/silty, with an attractive chewiness through the finish. The fruit for this wine was sourced from the Southern Valleys, where the soil is denser than the valley floor and responsible for Pinots of greater density, concentration and power. Flavor follows soil/geology. A smart wine, so give it time."
