Aromas and flavours of ripe plums and red cherry flesh are layered with soil, barrel and fruit spice, with a light savoury quality from partial whole-bunch fermentation. The palate is dry and textured, framed by fine tannins and lively acidity that echo the bouquet. Hand-harvested from the Ben Morven, Waihopai and Omaka Valleys, cold-soaked for five days and fermented with 40% whole bunch, then aged ten months in French oak barriques with 22% new wood. Well made and ready to enjoy through 2029 and beyond.

What the winery says:

The Southern Valleys subregion sits inland, away from the Marlborough coast, where clay-rich soils naturally restrict vine vigour and cool evening temperatures during the critical ripening period concentrate flavour in the fruit. The 2023 growing season began with above-average bunch numbers before unsettled weather around veraison, though the region narrowly missed the cyclone that struck the North Island's east coast; particularly cool nights helped keep early-season botrytis in check, and fully ripe fruit with concentrated flavours and classic acidity was harvested from the Ben Morven, Waihopai and Omaka Valleys. The fruit was cold-soaked for five days before natural fermentation, with 40% whole bunch included for elevated aromatics, then aged for ten months in 225-litre French oak barriques, 22% of it new.

Cameron Douglas, MS, camdouglasms.com, 92 Points (2023 Vintage)

"Aromas and flavours of ripe plums and red cherry flesh, layers of soil, barrel and fruit spice add breadth and intrigue. There's a light savoury quality suggesting some whole-bunch in some of the ferment. Dry, textured with tannins and plenty of acidity frame the fruit core reflecting the bouquet. Well made, youthful, dry and ready to enjoy from late 2025 through 2029+."
