That trick gives the 2025 vintage a lifted nose of lime and gentle tropical fruit, running into a palate of sweet mandarin and lemon sherbet, with racy acidity keeping the wine's natural sweetness honest rather than cloying. Five months resting on lees after fermentation builds real texture underneath all that zip, so it drinks with more weight than a typical off-dry Riesling. Giesen's German-born founders have chased this kind of precision Riesling since the label's earliest days, and Gemstone is where that ambition shows best. Pour it well chilled alongside something with a bit of spice.

What the winery says:

The 2025 season in Marlborough opened early and warm, with a mild, dry spring bringing budburst about a week ahead of average and just one light frost to manage. A warm, dry March then extended ripening long into autumn, with hang times stretching to around 120 days, while cooler January and February weather locked in natural acidity along the way. Fruit was lightly pressed, cold settled and split between stainless steel and granite fermenters - the granite tanks are carved from a single slab of plutonic rock, which Giesen says allows a gentle exchange of air that lifts concentration while keeping the wine clean and bright. Fermentation was stopped at the desired sweetness to balance that acidity, and the wine was matured on light lees for five months before bottling. The 2023/24 growing season turned properly dry - Marlborough was officially in drought by March - but a wet winter beforehand and a near-perfect autumn harvest meant smaller yields came through with real concentration and purity. Expect bright tropical fruit and citrus with that just-picked herb lift Marlborough does so well, balanced by a touch of natural sweetness against classic, zingy acidity. Individual parcels are fermented separately before blending, which helps build texture rather than relying on pure zip. The 2023/24 season was El Niño-driven and dry, with Marlborough officially in drought by mid-March, though a very wet winter beforehand had set the vines up well; intermittent frosts around flowering in late October trimmed yields further, and a near-perfect autumn harvest delivered fruit with excellent concentration and purity. In the winery, the focus is on vineyard expression and varietal clarity: after gentle extraction, individual parcels are fermented separately with selected yeasts chosen to build texture, weight and aromatics, then blended for a generous, fruit-forward style balanced between subtle natural sweetness and classic Marlborough acidity. It comes in at 13% ABV, pH 3.2, TA 7.0g/L and residual sugar of 3.3g/L, and Giesen suggests pairing it with a Thai green chicken curry and fresh coriander.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0968/2252/6319/files/GiesenVineyardSelectionSauvignonBlanc.jpg?v=1784057394
te-whare-ra-chardonnay
Te Whare Ra Chardonnay 2022

Te Whare Ra Chardonnay comes from one of Marlborough's true pioneer sites - a small, certified organic vineyard in Renwick that the Flowerday family has run since 2003, home to some of the region's oldest vines. This 2022 release blends two Chardonnay clones from the TWR home block, including Mendoza vines planted back in 1979. Expect grapefruit, toasted almond and white nectarine on the nose, with smoky, savoury notes and a lift of white florals, running into a complex, supple palate of fresh fig and white stone fruit backed by mineral tension and well-integrated toasty oak. The 2022 release blends fruit from both. The growing season was what the winery calls a 'Goldilocks vintage': good flowering conditions, moderate crops, no frost issues and a dry, even summer, with harvest running from mid-March into early April. Fruit was hand-picked and hand-sorted, destemmed, crushed and gently air-bag pressed, with soft pressings blended back into the free-run juice before settling overnight and filling to oak the next morning. All parcels were fermented in large-format French oak demi-muids, 25% new, spent a long time on full lees for texture, went through full malolactic fermentation, and matured in barrel for ten months before blending. The wine is unfined. Expect lifted pink grapefruit, toasted almond and white stone fruit aromas with savoury notes, white florals and a hint of spice, running into a complex, fleshy palate of grapefruit and ripe stone fruit, savoury mineral notes, well-integrated oak and a lingering, ripe acidity. It's 13% ABV, pH 3.35, TA 5.5g/L and bone dry, and the winery says it will keep developing with careful cellaring for four to six years.

What the experts say:

Cameron Douglas MS, 95/100 (2022 Vintage)
"Youthful and taut bouquet with scents of grapefruit and white peach, red apple and flinty stony qualities.
